The motor is the workhorse of any garage door opener system providing the muscle to open and close the garage door.

The electric motor itself provides drive to whatever the door is connected to, opening or closing the door as needed.

The electronics associated with the motor tell it which way to move the door. As a result, the motor is a fairly simple part of the system and is easy to test.

If the motor doesn’t work, it will need to be replaced. If the control electronics have failed, a new control circuit board may be a possibility.

The remote control allows the opener to be activated from a distance. For example, you may have a remote in one or more cars or mounted on a wall inside the garage.

The optical sensors are a fairly common issue. For example, they may be knocked out of alignment or may have debris blocking the line of sight.

These sensors are easy to test and realign. If the sensor is defective, it is easily replaced.

All garage door openers are required by law to have a manual release. The release is usually a cord hanging down from the opener shuttle on the track with a pull handle.

Pulling the release disengages the shuttle allowing the door to open or close manually.

This feature is critical when there is power loss so it should be checked often by the homeowner.
